The worst feeling.

For years I thought that I didn't have any anxiety. The truth was, I was in denial — I was as anxious as anybody living in the modern world was but I didn't want to see it.

I was worried, I was concerned, and I was aware, but that didn't mean I had anxiety. I thought it was natural to feel nervous almost all the time and to worry about what could or would happen.

I had a long list of things I was scared of but that wasn't anxiety nor did it help to build my anxiety. When I developed a fear of heights and got uncomfortable going up to the top of the John Hancock building, that was normal and saying that I’d never go up there again was rational. I let myself believe that having my fear control my actions was reasonable and not a sign of anxiety.

The list of the things that I didn't want to do grew and still I tried to convince myself that anxiety wasn't the cause of it. Didn't most people have something that they avoided doing?

When it became clear that the tension in my shoulder was chronic and not something that a warm bath could get rid of, I knew that my body was screaming at me that not only did I have anxiety, I had a lot of it.

I had to be honest with myself and realize that I needed to do something about my anxiety and that acknowledging it was only the first step. Exercise and body movement was helpful to relax, talking about my fears and concerns with friends, family, and mental health professors were crucial, as was finding ways to deal with my anxiety.

Not everybody has high levels of anxiety, but most people have some sort of anxiety in their life. And if your horoscope is any indication, here are the most anxious zodiac signs, ranked from most to least.

1. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

You don't look as if you have a ton of anxiety, but underneath that cool veneer lurks a very anxious person, Gemini. You have a talent for taking a small worry and morphing it into a huge concern. Your anxiety seems to multiply and it can sometimes feel as if you're buried underneath a mountain of doubt, dread, and negativity.

2. VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)

Virgos have a ton of anxiety. They're worrywarts by nature and then when their perfectionism gets mixed it, it just adds to their anxiety levels. They don't want to overthink everything, looking for worst-case scenarios, but it's part of who they are.

They love to research, so if they have a side effect from a new medication or they get some random symptom, they're the first to go online to try to self-diagnose themselves which makes them even more anxious.

3. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)

Aquarius, you want to be everything for everybody and do what they need which just causes you stress because you're not ten people. When you have to disappoint someone, you feel horrible about it and it makes you anxious.

You can't be everyone's savior; you need to think of yourself first sometimes. You want to save the world but it's impossible. Try to see how much good you do for this planet and other people instead of whipping yourself up into an anxious state.

4. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)

You tend to compare yourself to other people's success and accomplishments and find yourself coming up short, Capricorn. You want to do more and do better but this game plan is making you very anxious. You need to celebrate yourself and your own successes.

It's not a race. You're not a loser if you don't have a fancy house or car — it's about love and experiences. If you take a vacation, you'll be able to unwind and maybe you'll be less anxious for a while.

5. PISCES (February 19 - March 20)

If you could stay home and never have to deal with crowds of people, you might not have a lot of anxiety. But there are times when you have to speak to a group, go to a party, or even make a presentation and your anxiety rises.

You tend to think that people are judging you and that you aren't measuring up which adds to your anxiety. Here's the thing, Pisces: most of the time, no one is judging you, but if they are, so what? That's their deal and it really has very little to do with you.

6. LEO (July 23 - August 22)

Multi-tasking makes you anxious, Leo. You'd rather do one thing really well than a bunch of things half-assed.

Unfortunately, because so many people look up to you and you're successful at what you do, you have a full list of things that you need to do. You don't like having to divide your focus and doing less than stellar work which makes you anxious.

7. LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)

You have an intense desire to be liked, Libra, and that desire can make you anxious. You get anxiety when you're trying to make new friends, keep the friends you've got, or trying to change a non-friend's mind about you.

You think that if you look anxious, people will think you're out of control and will think less than you. However, the pretense of trying to look cool and collected is giving you anxiety.

8. CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

You don't enjoy this characteristic about yourself but you can be one for worst-case scenarios, and your pessimism can cause you great anxiety. You worry about the future, the past, the present, the people in your life, and the people who once were in your life.

You don't worry so much about yourself, Cancer; it's more about the people in your life. You want to protect them in the best way you can but taking care of everyone is stressing you out.

9. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)

You have a moderate amount of anxiety — unless you feel rejected, then you're thrown for a loop. If you get dumped by someone that you thought you had a future with or you don't get that job you had interviewed with, it destroys you.

When you don't feel loved or heard, it frustrates you, which turns into anxiety. Scorpio, you get incredibly anxious when you think there's nothing you can do to fix a situation. When you feel powerless, you're at your most anxious.

10. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)

Taurus individuals tend to bury their anxiety way down deep. They're not going to do anything without giving it a lot of thought, especially if it involves trusting someone. They trust their gut but are still on guard.

The voice of their anxiety is low enough to ignore. It's probably the care they take in all things that allows their anxiety to manifest.

11. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)

Sagittarians have a constant need for new stimulus. They tend to think highly of themselves and don't fixate on what negative things could happen. They can be sloppy, tactless, and thoughtless, but they've made peace with their flaws and are able to spin them so they're still positive qualities.

They're not messy, they're just not uptight. They're not blunt, they're direct, and they don't have to worry about doing the wrong thing, from accidents come unexpected delights!

Aries tend to create anxiety for themselves. They always want to be the best, to win, and to crush every challenge. By doing this, they put a lot of pressure on themselves.
