Fastest And Best Way To Type The Shrug Emoji On Mac And iPhone

Because when you're feeling ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, copying and pasting is SUCH a hassle.

If there’s one emotion I feel strongest and most regularly, it’s this one: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Late for work again? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Spent a liiiiittle bit too much money online shopping? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Accidentally finished a whole bottle of wine in one sitting? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The shrug emoji dude just gets it. Sh*t happens, and you can’t spend time worrying about it all. So you just… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

As useful as the shrug emoji dude is, he’s pretty damn difficult to type.

We are a culture of immediate gratification and having to go through the 7-second ordeal of searching ‘shrug emoji,’ clicking through to a suitable article, and copying just takes way too freaking long.

Well, what if I said you don’t have to go through all of that? What if I told you there’s a way to type the shrug emoji in like two seconds or less?

Rejoice, my fellow DGAFers — you’re in for a treat. I’m about to show you the best and FASTEST way to type the shrug emoji.

Disclaimer: this very necessary instruction manual is only for Apple OS users, sorry! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How to type the shrug emoji on a Mac

Open up system preferences and choose keyboard. You’ll see a little menu bar with a few options at the top. Click on text. It’ll bring you to something that looks like this:

Press the plus sign that appears at the bottom of that list. A text box will appear in the replace side of the list. This is where you’ll enter the word you’ll use whenever you want to shrug stuff off. It can literally be any word. I’m boring and chose shrugs.

Once you’ve chosen your code word, hit tab and another text box will open in the with section. This is where you paste in the shruggy guy (the last time you’ll ever have to copy and paste him, ever!). I’ll even add him here to make it easy for you: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Now your list should look like this:

This works in most apps, but not in browsers. Go on and give it a try!

How to type the shrug emoji on iPhone

Apple OS mirrors itself pretty well on both mobile and desktop, so the instructions are pretty similar.

First, go into your settings app. Scroll down to general and click into keyboard. You should see an option for text replacement.

At the top of the screen, hit the plus sign. Where it says phrase, type in the shrug emoji. Here he is again for easy access: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In the shortcut section, type in whatever word you’d like that’ll transform into the coveted shruggie dude:

This works most places on your iPhone — messaging apps, Facebook, etc. Have fun!

And voila — your life is now approximately 29 times easier. You’re welcome.
