get over an almost relationship

You had a real connection... at least, you thought you did.

The pain of an almost relationship can be just as bad, if not worse than the pain of an official relationship. If you’ve ever been in an almost relationship, you know that’s true. At least with a regular relationship, you get some kind of closure, some reason for the breakup, and even if the reason is stupid, you know.

Almost relationships encourage ghosting, breadcrumbing, and hard-nexting because of their no strings, no investment, and no guarantees attitude.

You may wonder exactly what an almost relationship is and want a definition of it, but this can be almost as confusing as the behavior is.

There seem to be a few ideas on what an almost relationship is. It might be a relationship that is only played out in texts, computer chats, or messages and where you never meet the other person in real time; an almost relationship can be when you’re dating someone but without any labels and by the time you’re dying to know if it’s official, it usually ends.

With an almost relationship, you never get to a place where you’re secure in knowing that the other person is into you, committed to you in any way, or if they’re going to be there when things get tough.

In your mind, you’re ready for the boyfriend/girlfriend status, but in his, you’re just a distraction or someone to have sex with. You may want your almost relationship to become a real, honest-to-goodness relationship but for some reason, it never gets to that point.

Maybe it stopped being fun or it felt too serious to him and he got scared. Whatever the reason, it didn’t feel right and so it ended.

The ending is often the hardest part because one day he’s there wishing you a great day and the next, nothing. And the day after, there's silence until you realize your almost relationship isn’t going to turn into the romance you hoped for.

Here’s how the zodiac signs get over an almost relationship.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)

Once you get over the shock of the realization that somebody wasn't interested in having a relationship with you, you get into pursue-mode. You start going out more, flirting, and trying new things, especially things that never interested you before. You want newness and you want to prove that you've still got it. When you fill your time up to such an extent, you don't have time to feel rejected or sorry for yourself. You know it's their loss for not choosing you.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)

When your almost relationship ends, you give them up as if they were a painful addiction which means you cut them entirely out of your life. You unfriend, unfollow, and delete their number from your phone. If you have any pictures of them, no matter how cute or special, they're deleted. If they try to contact you, you block their number. Every time you think of them, you stop yourself and try to think of someone or something else. You go through relationship rehab and you promise yourself that there will not be anymore almost relationships.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

When an almost relationship ends, you breathe a sigh of relief — even if it was only an almost relationship there still was a level of commitment and intimacy that made you feel uncomfortable. You enjoyed the long talks you had until 3 AM, but you can get that same level of satisfaction with somebody at a party or even at work. This almost relationship was good practice and while you might not be ready for a full-on committed relationship, you feel as if you made some progress.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

When your almost relationship ends, you do what you do when any of your relationships end: you become an emotional detective. You go through every communication that happened between the two of you (because, of course, you saved them) and you look for clues and evidence of what you might have done wrong, how the relationship was never meant to last, and you try to gather information from witnesses. It's only when you've thoroughly processed the crime scene that you can have closure.

Honestly, you're glad to have the energy and focus back that you used with your almost relationship. Now, you can put everything into your various projects and creative endeavors. That almost relationship was too much of a time-suck to grieve. You thought it had the potential for being something more but apparently, you were wrong. But you're not going to beat yourself up about it. It's time to set some goals and start pursuing the dreams you've been neglecting.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)

When your almost relationship has ended, you tend to distance yourself emotionally from it. You tell yourself that it didn't mean anything and that you never thought it would lead to anything serious in the first place. You know you can't fix it because there's nothing to fix; there was no depth or meaning to this relationship, it was as unfulfilling as a candy bar but not as sweet.

LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)

You try to see what you learned from your almost relationship and how it affected your growth as a person, but it's challenging for you to look at it in such a mature way. The truth is you feel used and like they didn't want to have a real relationship with you because, for some reason, they didn't think you were good enough. When an almost relationship ends, it taps into your insecurities and may make you very reluctant to get involved with anyone ever again. You'll get over it eventually but it will still sting from time to time.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)

You tend to feel slightly embarrassed when an almost relationship ends because you think that you were too vulnerable and that you opened up yourself too much. You're angry at yourself for the expectations you had about this relationship and how you were positive that it would lead to a long-term committed one. You can't believe that you weren't more careful, but once your passionate nature is released, it's very difficult for you to hold yourself back. You'll tend to your wounds, be more careful about who you let into your heart, and be a bit more suspicious of people who seem too good to be true.

When an almost relationship ends, it's no big deal because that probably wasn't the only one you had going on so you'll just shift your focus on to another one. You like almost relationships because they don't tie you down, they give you attention and affection when you need it, and they can't demand much from you in return. You have a much harder time with real relationships than almost relationships. Now, you have a funny anecdote to tell new friends.
