When she was 19-years-old the Japanese American former prep school student (born on January 3, 1986) began working as a professional dominatrix at a dungeon in Manhattan, soon moving on to become a stripper at Larry Flynt's infamous Hustler Club, as well a cam-girl — finally landing a gig as the "show whore" on radio show Bubbe the Love Sponge, where she met porn actress and producer Gina Lynn, who offered her an opportunity to join the porn industry.

She's been especially vocal in the way she seeks to break down the myths and stereotypes of women in the porn industry. Speaking with Vice about her first porn shoot, she shared the following details of the experience:

"'It felt so natural, like it didn't feel like this big defining moment,' she said. 'It felt almost like when I am on set now. I was really happy, like, This is definitely what I want to do.'"

The 5'2" Akira (whose measurements are 32-24-34), has been engaged three times, married once before, and is currently married to fellow porn star and director Toni Ribas in December of 2012.

Super fun fact: Asa — which means "morning" in Japanese — is her actual given name. She chose Akira as the last name of her stage name from the anime film, Akira.
