Why This Celebratory Vagina Song Is The New Anthem We NEED

Long live the vagina.

Pussy Riot is back, and this time it’s with an ode to the vagina that will get stuck in your head for days and days and days.

You might know this Russian feminist punk band less for their music and more for their legal woes.

Their clashes with the law for their protests against Russian president Vladimir Putin (who they consider to be a dictator) and their vocal support of feminist and the LGBT movement in Russia has made them heroes, but has also earned most members of the band some prison time.

Their rebellious attitudes and ride or die feminism made them infamous in the United States.

If you saw the newest Bridget Jones movie, you’ll find the outrageous girl band being defended by Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy to be a thinly-veiled homage to the band.

Now they are back in the headlines, and it’s not because they broke any laws.

Pussy Riot just released a new track called “Straight Outta Vagina” and it’s the pro-vagina anthem the world didn’t even know it had been waiting for.

The chorus of the song is a triumphant, catchy ear worm reminding anyone listening that regardless of their feelings about vaginas, “Don’t be stupid, don’t be dumb, vagina’s where you’re really from!”

In an age where the next potential president of the United States can casually mention wanting to grab a woman by her vagina, it’s awesome to hear a band of women loudly reminding the world at large that a vagina is more than just a body part to make lascivious comments about.

A vagina is the wellspring of life.

Decades before Donald Trump was grabbing pussies, his giant orange head was emerging from one, something he has seem to have totally forgotten. Guys are obsessed with their penises. They are obsessed with them that it has become a joke.

You spot a guy driving a showy sports car and you say “somebody’s compensating for something!” But we only talk about a woman’s vagina if we’re talking about sex or removing a woman’s humanity from the equation altogether.

A woman’s vagina isn’t property, it’s the center of her power. It where human life comes from, and if people need to sing a catchy Russian punk pop song about this to remember it, then so be it!

I think when men say “pussy” or “cunt” or “box” they are doing it because they feel the need to take power away from women. Babies don’t get popped out of the penis. Sure, the penis contributes, but life grows inside a woman, it comes from her, and there’s nothing more intensely powerful and unifying than remembering that a vagina is where we all come from.
