Growing up in beautiful Newcastle, Australia, Becca Lee's parents taught her to believe in herself — fully and completely. "I was raised to believe that nothing was beyond my reach but there was never any pressure on me to be, or become, anything more than myself," said Becca.
She admits, though, that these lessons of self-love and confidence were somehow lost on her in her earlier years. From age 12, she used writing as a way to get through what she describes as an "extremely tumultuous adolescence". She struggled for a long time with chronic perfectionism, depression, anxiety and eventually, self-harm. Her writing, which in the beginning was much different than what its evolved into now, was her catharsis — a place where she could escape and work through her pain.
For the past few years, Becca Lee has been able to use her dark past to bring light to those who need it most.
After learning how to love herself and give her life new meaning, she started to share her work on social media, hoping it would give someone else a chance to change for the better too.
The most important part of Becca Lee's writing is that she pulls from her own life and experiences, and weaves poems and words together into something that is both beautiful and wise.
"My work is all based on my life’s journey and all that I have experienced, overcome, learned and achieved," says Becca.
"Learning to find beauty in even the darkest moments of my past and love within my perfectly imperfect self has been my greatest achievement to date and is a constant inspiration for my writing."
Teaching others how to love themselves before anything or anyone else is something that is not often remembered. Thanks to Becca's work, we are reminded that even the darkest moments in life have a silver lining.
