Sad Girl Lying Down

Because scream-singing in the car is way better than texting that jerk.

No matter how amicable (or vicious) a breakup is, you will undoubtedly go through the seven phases of grief during this time. If you aren't familiar, they're as follows:

  • Shock and Denial
  • Pain and Guilt
  • Anger
  • Depression and Reflection
  • The Up Swing
  • Starting over
  • Acceptance ... and hope.

In all fairness, they're probably talking about the grievance of a death but I think that pretty much describes the pain of a breakup. It feels like your insides are plotting to slowly shut your body down — your stomach muscles stay contracted all day because it's harder to breath, therefore making it impossible to sob while you cry. So instead you just make that ugly, silent face while you sit in a puddle of tears. Until you just get plain old pissed off, that is. You've sat and had time to think about the damn time — all that damn time you wasted on this person for whatever reason. And it pisses you the hell off! I'm here to tell you that you're entitled to your anger, hell anger is healthy (what my passive aggressive ex taught me after his mental melt).

However, you've got to play the part so while you're entitled by no means should you be drunk texting your ex to tell them how they ruined your life. Remember, there's a right and a wrong way to do everything, along with a proper time and place. Not to mention, not all relationships get the privilege of closure. So, if that's your relationship or if you're not emotionally stable enough to appropriately ask for and receive that closure from your ex, here's a playlist to get you through until you no longer have any fucks to give. Because, if there's one thing we know it's that music gets you through everything! So start burning yourself a CD, circa 2001.

1. "Not Gon' Cry" by Mary J. Blige

I know there are no guarantees
In love you take your chances
But somehow it seems unfair to me
Look at the circumstances
Through sickness and health 'till death do us part
Those were the words that we said from our hearts
So now when you say that you're leaving me
I don't get that part

2. "Gives You Hell" by All American Rejects

Now you'll never see
What you've done to me
You can take back your memories
They're no good to me
And here's all your lies
You can't look me in the eyes
With the sad, sad look
That you wear so well

3. "Pray For You" by Jaron and The Long Road to Love

I pray your brakes go out runnin' down a hill
I pray a flowerpot falls from a window sill and knocks you in the head like I'd like to
I pray your birthday comes and nobody calls
I pray you're flyin' high when your engine stalls
I pray all your dreams never come true
Just know wherever you are honey, I pray for you

I'm really glad I found my way to church
'Cause I'm already feelin' better and I thank God for the words
Yeah I'm goin' take the high road
And do what the preacher told me to do
You keep messin' up and I'll keep prayin' for you

4. "Picture to Burn" by Taylor Swift

I hate that stupid old pickup truck
You never let me drive
You're a redneck heartbreak
Who's really bad at lying
So watch me strike a match
On all my wasted time
As far as I'm concerned you're
Just another picture to burn!

There's no time for tears,
I'm just sitting here planning my revenge
There's nothing stopping me
From going out with all of your best friends
And if you come around saying sorry to me
My daddy's gonna show you how sorry you'll be

5. "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

7. "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood

That I dug my key into the side
Of his pretty little souped up 4 wheel drive,
Carved my name into his leather seats ...
I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights,
Slashed a hole in all 4 tires ...
Maybe next time he'll think before he cheats.

8. "In the End" by Lincoln Park

One thing, I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so (far)
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
In the end

9. "Cry Me A River" by Justin Timberlake

You told me you loved me
Why did you leave me, all alone
Now you tell me you need me
When you call me, on the phone
Girl I refuse, you must have me confused
With some other guy
Your bridges were burned, and now it's your turn
To cry, cry me a river

10. "Forget You" by Cee Lo Green

I guess the change in my pocket
Wasn't enough I'm like,
Forget you!
And forget her too!
Said, if I was richer, I'd still be with ya
Ha, now ain't that some shit? (ain't that some shit?)
And although there's pain in my chest
I still wish you the best with a ...
Forget you!
Oo, oo, ooo

11. "Rollin' In the Deep" by Adele

Baby, I have no story to be told
But I've heard one on you
And I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Make a home down there
As mine sure won't be shared

12. "My Loving (Never Gonna Get It)" by EnVogue

Now you promise me
The moon and the stars
Save your breath
You won't get very far
Gave you many chances
To make changes
The only thing you changed
Was love to hate
It doesn't matter what you do
Or what you say
She doesn't love you, no way
Maybe next time
You'll give your woman a little respect
Then you won't be hearing her say no way

13. "These Boots Are Made For Walking" by Nancy Sinatra

You keep playin' where you shouldn't be playin'
And you keep thinkin' that you'll never get burned, ha!
I just found me a brand new box of matches, yeah
And what he knows, you ain't had time to learn

These boots are made for walkin'
And that's just what they'll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you

14. "Get Out (Leave)" by JoJo

Tell me why you're looking so confused
When I'm the one who didn't know the truth
How could you ever be so cold
To go behind my back and call my friend
Boy you must have gone and bumped your head
Because you left her number on your phone
(So now after all is said and done)
Maybe I'm the one to blame but
(To think that you could be the one)
Well it didn't work out that way

15. Bust Your Windows by Jazmine Sullivan

I bust the windows out your car
And no it didn't mend my broken heart
I'll probably always have these ugly scars
But right now I don't care about that part
I bust the windows out your car
After I saw you laying next to her
I didn't wanna but I took my turn
I'm glad I did it cause you had to learn

I must admit it helped a little bit
To think of how you'd feel when you saw it
I didn't know that I had that much strength
But I'm glad you'll see what happens when
You see you can't just play with people's feelings
Tell them you love them and don't mean it
You'll probably say that it was juvenile
But I think that I deserve to smile
