If you've been feeling like your libido has been in the toilet lately, you may want to take a look at what you have in your home. It might seem weird to think that something you have in your house could possibly be interfering with your sex drive, but outside things can play a big role in whether or not you want to get it on. And everyday plastic, we're sorry to say, is definitely one of those things.

A recent study found that additives, known as phthalates, used to soften plastic can very well be killing your desire to do it. These man-made chemicals can get into our system and mess with our natural hormones.

They've also been linked to other ailments like diabetes, asthma, and feminizing the brains of baby boys, according to the World Health Organization. But the problems is, these things are everywhere — shower curtains, flooring, food packaging, and even our cars. So trying to escape them isn't exactly easy.

Lead researcher, Dr. Emily Barrett of the University of Rochester School of Medicine, studied the libido of 360 pregnant women in their 20s and 30s to gauge what could possibly be the reason for this. It was those women with higher levels of phthalates who were 2.5 times more likely to say that their interest in sex was pretty minimal.

"It is interesting because these are chemicals that we are all exposed to every day. They are throughout our environment and every person studied showed measurable levels," said Barrett. "For a lot of women with loss of libido, there is no obvious reason and it is important to know how these chemicals might contribute."

So, what are we supposed to do? Kick all our plastics to the curb for the sake of our libido and health? Well, yes.

As Dr. Barrett pointed out, the first big change is eating less processed foods. It's the packaging of processed foods that are really doing a number on your body. In choosing to eat whole foods, you're doing wonders right there.

Also, opting for wood or stone flooring helps, along with trading in your plastic shower curtains for cloth or glass doors. Trying to limit how much plastic you have in your home as best you can definitely makes a big difference. Besides, did you really need all that Tupperware? Are you your mom or something? No.

Of course, there are other things that can contribute to a lowered libido, and if you can't pinpoint exactly what's going on, then it might be time to see your doctor. But in the meantime, cutting out on all the plastic in your life is a step in the right direction to getting your sex life back on track.

And just think of all the space you'll have once you rid yourself of all that plastic. More room for new sex toys.
