Dylan Penn Poses Nude: Career Mistake Or Stroke Of Genius?

Dylan Penn Treats Magazine

Who is Dylan Penn and why do we care that she posed nude?

Thinking purely in "dad" terms and mentality, we are fairly certain that Dylan Penn's father, actor Sean Penn, isn't exactly thrilled about his 22-year-old daughter going au naturel, with a few strategically placed props, for the cover of Treats, an artistic quarterly publication. Most dads wouldn't be, since they fancy themselves protectors. However, Papa Bear Penn can be glad that his lil' girl chose this outlet so she could work with photographer Tony Duran, since she appreciates his artistic style, as opposed to Playboy, which reportedly wanted her, as well. Miss Penn is totally in the buff on her cover, save for furry purse covering her vajayjay. Oh, and that's a Fendi bag and likely has a three or four zeros in its price tag.

Penn almost looks like a younger Jessica Chastain, with her thick, rough and reddish waves and creamy smooth, porcelain skin, although we can't quite picture the Oscar nominee and "motherf*cker who found this place" from Zero Dark Thirty posing nude like so …

… which introduces our main point. Who is Dylan Penn, other than an insanely attractive celeb offspring, and what does she do? Why do we care that she is posing nude on the cover of a little-known magazine?

And was that her whole point of doing so? Did her birthday suit shoot harm her fledgling acting career or will it give her a boost and put her on Young Hollywood's fickle, constantly changing radar for the next 15 minutes or three years, which was likely her intent?

Posing nude for a magazine is not a new convention. Who hasn't done it?

Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Demi Moore and Britney Spears have posed in the buff, the latter two while pregnant, and those are just a few names off the top of our head. Hell, Rihanna posts naked Instagram selfies like it's her job and you could argue that it sorta is her job to stay on the pop radar by showing skin, skin, skin and more skin. Nude mag covers are almost a tired gimmick, especially if devoid of any artfulness. It doesn't shock and it doesn't make a cover subject more or less head-turning than if she were wearing a custom couture gown by Balenciaga.

While Penn's spread — no pun! — is very tastefully done, it does leave us wondering if it's necessary. It's a bit too soon to be showing off her lady parts. Dylan, we hardly know you. Can we learn a little more about you, your acting skills and your ability to lose yourself in your characters and roles before we get that intimate? To us, it feels like she made a huge leap a bit too soon and posing nude makes her slightly less interesting.

It feels like she let it all hang out, killing the mystique. We want to know her on screen before we see her naked. Now that she's given us a huge look at her not-really-obscured nipples and got everyone talking, we're sort of like "Next?"

Penn, a model up until now, is transitioning to acting with a horror film on the horizon, so it's not like it'll be a role she pours her soul into, but still. Maybe she should have saved the nudity when promoting that effort, since doing it now feels a little gratuitous and a little too "Hello, world!" The nakey nakes likely won't hurt her career, other than to get haters hatin' and sipping mightily from their 32 oz. cup of the Haterade, the dudes gawking and drooling and the feminists arguing whether or not she objectified herself.

The answer really is all of the above. It's too soon to tell if this harmed her fledgling career, but this let-it-all-hang-out spread doesn't leave us wanting more as much as she'd probably have liked it to.
