In tragic news, L'Wren Scott, celebrated fashion designer and longtime girlfriend of Mick Jagger, committed suicide this morning in her New York City apartment.
Scott was reportedly plagued by debt, her fashion business failing. Sources close to the former model said that they knew something was up when she began ducking phone calls and acting strangely, but no one saw this coming. Other sources told Page Six, "Everybody who knows L'Wren and Mick are totally and completely shocked. Neither of them drink and do drugs, and they were always really affectionate with each other. There were no signs of problems in their relationship."
Jagger's rep released a statement telling press that he was completely "shocked and devastated" by the news, which went down while he was on tour with the Rolling Stones in Australia.
Who was L'Wren Scott? She was more than Jagger's love and much more than a statuesque pretty face.
She was born Luann Bambrough.
Her adoptive, Mormon parents gave their blessing when she moved from their home in Roy, Utah to Paris at 17 years old after graduating high school to become a model -- at which point she changed her name to L'Wren Scott.
She was a tall drink of water.
By 12 years old, Scott was already 6'0". She shot up to 6'3" by adulthood and towered over 5'8" Mick Jagger.
She worked in almost every arena of fashion.
Scott started as a model, then became an influential celebrity stylist, working on campaigns like Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds fragrance -- the highest selling celebrity scent ever -- as well as movies like Eyes Wide Shut. It was only after she'd satisfied her creativity in those fields that she became a designer.
Famous women love her clothes.
Celeb fans of L'Wren Scott's designs include Christina Hendricks, Michelle Obama, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Campbell, Penelope Cruz, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Bullock, Uma Thurman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie and more -- many of whom have worn her gowns to the Oscars.
L'Wren Scott was fiercely independent.
"L'Wren is very independent and would not take any nonsense from anyone no matter how famous they were," her adopted mother Lula Bambrough told The Daily Mail in 2003. "She usually knows what she wants and she gets it. It doesn't surprise me at all that she's tamed Mick. She is very much her own woman and it would be my guess that is why this Mick Jagger likes her."
