Set in the 1960s NYC folk music scene, Llewyn Davis is a struggling musician at the lowest point in his career. Living with no money, couch surfing night to night, Llewyn plays at small local bars trying to make ends meet. Along his journey, Llewyn encounters many obstacles ... most of which he creates himself.
1. Surround yourself with the right people.
Proving just how hard it is to break into the entertainment industry, Llewyn Davis receives a heavy dose of reality throughout the movie. Instead of working hard and being persistent, he gives up when someone tells him that he doesn't have what it takes. Don't let people into your life who aren't there to support you!
2. Quit looking for an easy buck.
In a rush to earn a quick $200, Llewyn sings a song with Justin Timberlake and Adam Driver (yes, Adam from Girls is in this movie, and it's ah-mazing). Instead of collecting royalties, he takes the money upfront. And what happens? Well, the song starts to blow up and while the other two cash in, Llewyn is S.O.L.. Relax and be patient, especially when it comes to relationships. Rushing things only makes for an unhappy ending.
3. Respect the people who respect you.
When you're homeless and sleeping on friends' couches, like Llewyn, keep in mind that lashing out at them and treating them poorly is probably not the best way to behave. People who truly love you will forgive you … but that doesn't mean you should shit all over them whenever you feel like it!
4. Know when to move on.
In the beginning of the movie we learn that Llewyn's music partner Mike has just committed suicide, leaving Llewyn with a semi-popular song that he can't sing solo. Alone, he grieves throughout the movie and refuses to find a new partner. Sometimes you have to pick yourself back up and get back on the horse. Otherwise, you may end up wandering forever.
5. Maybe you shouldn't cheat on your boyfriend?
Carey Mulligan, who is cheating on Justin Timberlake in the movie (seriously?), finds out she is pregnant and it may be Llewyn's baby. Later in the movie we learn that she's also sleeping with a local bar owner. Hey girl, breaking up is better than being a pregnant cheater clueless about her baby's paternity. Just saying.
