Even though Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones haven't been photographed together since April, we were always rooting for them as a symbol of hope in a town where press tours last longer than celebrity marriages. It seems, however, that after 13 years their marriage may be crumbling beneath them.
The couple, who wed in a fairy-tale wedding at New York's Plaza Hotel in 2000, has come across bumpier times of late. Though the Douglases haven't called things off just yet, "Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage," her rep said in a statement.

Although the picture of a loving, supportive marriage for so long, these last few years brought burden-upon-burden:
July 2009: Michael's oldest son Cameron (whose mother is Michael's first wife Diandra Luker) was arrested in July 2009 in a federal drug sting. He was sentenced to five years in prison for drug dealing. "Look, my son was a drug dealer, and he's been trying to kill himself for a while, and I can't condone his behavior, so I think the court recognized his drug addiction as well as the crime he committed," Michael Douglas told Matt Lauer. In 2011, Cameron Douglas pleaded guilty to possessing drugs in his jail cell and is now set to be released in early 2018.
2010: Michael Douglas is diagnosed with stage four throat cancer. "When Michael was diagnosed with cancer I really thought, 'You are going to have to wipe me off the floor,'" his wife told Stella magazine. But was his cancer caused by oral sex? "Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV (human papillomavirus), which actually comes from cunnilingus," the actor told The Guardian.
April 2011: Catherine seeks treatment for bipolar II disorder, often triggered by prolonged stress. In April 2011, she sought treatment at a Connecticut facility, and in April of this year, the actress once again received treatment. "Catherine has proactively checked into a healthcare facility," her rep stated. "Previously, Catherine has said that she is committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner."

Sure, the writing may be on the wall now, but should we have seen this coming? According to Licensed Professional Counselor Kim Olver, May-December romances (Catherine is 43 to Michael's 68) have their own trouble from the get go, including insecurities that can often manifest themselves through infidelity. There aren't any rumors of cheating or salacious affairs right now, and until the couple files for divorce, we'll hold out hope they won't suffer the same fate as Ashton and Demi or Katie and Tom.
