For years, Gossip Girl actress Kelly Rutherford has been locked in a bitter custody war with ex-husband Daniel Giersch, a German businessman, over their two kids, Hermés, 7 next month, and Helena, 4.
In April 2012, Giersch's American visa was revoked, and in August 2012, a judge ruled that the children should live with him in Monaco. Since Rutherford's schedule was flexible, she would be available to travel abroad to visit her son and daughter.
Refusing to be an ocean away from her babies, the determined mom spent millions on legal costs, and this past June, Rutherford, 44, was even forced to file for bankruptcy, claiming approximately $2 million in debt. "[My children are] U.S. citizens who were sent to a foreign country that neither their father nor I have any connection to. I think the whole thing is bizarre," she previously told UsWeekly.
YourTango sat down with the former Lily van der Woodsen at the 270th Anniversary of Moët & Chandon to discuss her children, relationship advice, and more. "I think once you have children, you understand love. You understand romantic love or you understand the love you have for your parents—but it's something about the love of your children that hopefully changes your whole perspective on the world," she said.
"I look at everyone as someone's child now. So, it's different way of looking at things," Rutherford continued. On a lighter note, one fun thing she adores about her children? "The way they smell! They're so delicious."
Following her intense split, Kelly is now living in New York City as a single lady. Should she settle down again, there's one important lesson she'll keep in mind. "I don't know how she said it, but my mother always said you need to take care of yourself in a relationship. I think we all tend to lose ourselves in the moment, and that's okay. But I think it's important to get back in tune with ourselves again, to find that place where we are always taking care of ourselves and our relationship as well—particularly women."
