Cory Monteith, the 30-year-old Glee actor best known for playing Rachel Berry's on-and-off-screen love, has checked into rehab ... and girlfriend Lea Michele couldn't be more pleased with his decision.
"I love and support Cory and will stand by him through this," she said in a statement to People. "I am grateful and proud he made this decision."
Likewise, 20th Century Fox, which produces the award-winning Glee, expressed their support for the star in a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter. "Cory is a beloved member of the Glee family and we fully support his decision to seek treatment. Everyone at the show wishes him well and looks forward to his return."
In the past, Monteith has spoken openly about battling drug and alcohol addition during his teen years. "I burned a lot of bridges," he told Parade in 2011. The British Columbia native, who dropped out of school at 16, admitted to excessive drug use and doing "anything and everything, as much as possible ... I had a serious problem."
At 19, he first entered rehab—although he quickly returned to his destructive patterns. Monteith says he didn't reach rock bottom until he stole a large sum of money from a loved one and was given an ultimatum by his family to get sober or go to jail.
Now slated to miss filming the final two episodes of Glee's fourth season, rumors that Monteith and 26-year-old Michele sparked an off-camera romance began almost immediately after the first episode aired. However, the couple did not confirm their relationship until April of last year.
Michele, who dated Broadway performer Theo Stockman from 2009 to 2011, spoke openly about her relationship with Monteith last January in an interview with Life & Style. "I really think finding someone that you are best friends with is the secret," she said before adding, "I'm dating my celebrity crush!"
