Pop sensation Shakira and her professional soccer playing boyfriend, Gerard Piqué, welcomed their first child yesterday—a little boy named Milan Piqué Mebarak. The hospital confirmed that he weighed approximately 6lbs., 6 ounces, and that both mother and child are in excellent health.
It looks as though life is already off to a pretty good start for little Milan. Upon his birth, he became a member of FC Barcelona—the infamous and nearly undefeatable soccer team his father plays for in Spain (we're wondering what it's like to have a baby with amazing soccer genes in utero—kicking much?!). And congratulatory messages are pouring in from around the world.
According to US News, Colombian President (where Shakira was born) Juan Manuel Santos sent a note of good wishes, while the Pies Descalzos (Shoeless) Foundation (a charity Shakira established in 1997) sent a Twitter message saying, "The children and Pies Descalzos team are happy for Milan's birth. We love you Shakira!"
Shakira acknowledged the birth on her Twitter account yesterday and asked her fans "to accompany me in your prayers on this very important day of my life."
So, what's behind the name they chose?
In a statement, Shakira said Milan was of central European origin and meant "loved, full of grace, loving," in Slavic and "unification" in Sanksrit. We know that Shakira is very incolved in philinthropic causes, so perhaps she hopes, like any mother, for all these selfless qualities to be present in her little one. Milan, coincidentally, is also the name of the famous soccer team from that Italian city and Barcelona's next rival in the European Champions League. His middle name, Piqué, is obviously his father's last name.
And Mebarak is one of Shakira's two surnames—the one from her father's side.
Congratulations to the new parents!
