The day of love has a strange side.

It's about that time, ladies and gents! That one day of the year where we take a step back and remind those special people (or pets!) in our lives just how much we love them with candy, cards and gifts.

Whether you're a hopeless romantic or a Valentine's Day cynic, here are six weird things we bet you didn't know about Valentines Day.

1. Hopeless Romantic
Valentines Day is believed to have begun in 270 AD when, under the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius II, Bishop Valentine was jailed for performing weddings against the emperor's wishes. During his time in jail, the Roman Romeo wrote a love note to the jailor's daughter, signing it, "From your Valentine." How romantic!

2. Sweet Relief
In the 1800s, doctors commonly advised their heartbroken patients to eat chocolate. They claimed it would sooth their pain. To this day many women find comfort in a box of chocolate when dealing with heartbreak.

3. Teachers Pet
Teachers receive the most Valentines Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, and yes, pets.

4. Puppy Love
Upwards of 9 million pet owners buy gifts for their canine companions on Valentines Day. Hey, dogs need love, too.

5. The Price Of Love
Men spend nearly twice as much as women each Valentines Day. This year, the average man will spend more than $150 to let that special someone know they're loved. Aww ...

6. Love Birds
It was once said that if a woman saw a robin flying by on Valentines Day, she was destined to marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry poor, but live a happy life with her hubby. Seeing a goldfinch meant there was a rich man in her future. (Anyone see any goldfinches lately ... ?)
