Today is one of the most important days in films – the announcing of the nominees for the 85th Annual Academy Awards. So, are the nominees for Best Actress excited about the prestigious honor, or worried about heartbreak?
The Oscar Love Curse is a superstition that the woman who takes home the Oscar for Best Actress will most likely get her heart broken in the near future. It all began with Claudette Colbert who took home the Oscar in 1934 for It Happened One Night and divorced from her husband Norman Foster shortly after.
More recently, some of the top A-list actresses have become victims of the curse. Julia Roberts took home the award in 2001 for Erin Brockovich and soon lost her boyfriend Benjamin Bratt. Charlize Theron won in ‘04 for Monster and then broke it off with boyfriend Stuart Townsend. In ‘05, Hilary Swank won the academy over with Million Dollar Baby, and then became single after her husband Chad Lowe and her divorced after nine years of marriage.
Reese Witherspoon found out her husband Ryan Philippe was cheating shortly after her win for Walk the Line in ‘06 and Kate Winslet’s husband Sam Mendes called it quits shortly after she was awarded for The Reader ‘09. And, last but not lease is one of the saddest – Sandra Bullock won her first Oscar in 2010 for The Blind Side and then left husband Jesse James who was cheating.
That leaves us with this year’s noms. Should they be nervous? Well not all of them.
Jessica Chastain is up for Zero Dark Thirty and is happily single (and pledges not to ever date another actor). So, good for you! At 85, Emmanuelle Riva is the oldest star to be nominated for this category. Up for her role in Amour, the beautiful actress has nothing to worry about!
Quvenzhané Wallis is also in the running for her adorable role in Beasts of the Southern Wild, and alongside Riva, is making history too! At nine, she’s the youngest to be nominated for this category.
Jennifer Lawrence landed her second Oscar’s nominee at only 22 for Silver Linings Playbook, and has been with her boyfriend, English actor Nicholas Hault for two years. Uh-oh! Also in jeopardy is Naomi Watts who is nominated for her role in The Impossible. With boyfriend of seven years and father of two children Leiv Shreiber, the star’s got some worrying to do!
