David Letterman On Cheating: 'I Can't Forgive' Myself

Even though his wife has forgiven him, he can't forgive himself.

On Sunday's episode of Oprah's Next Chapter, David Letterman opened up about the affair heard around the world.

"I have no one to blame but myself," the 65-year-old Late Show With David Letterman host told Oprah Winfrey. "I think if you’re going to have a flow chart of the responsibility for this circumstance, this sex scandal, my name is at the top. I’m not sure what it means, but I’m taking responsibly for it, trying to atone for it."

Back in 2009 the host admitted to his wife Regina Lasko (and the rest of the world) that he had sex with women who worked for him on the Late Show, including his assistant Stephanie Birkitt. A producer for the CBS show 48 Hours was dating Birkitt and blackmailed Letterman, threatening that unles the TV host paid him $2 million, he was going to write a screenplay about the Letterman's infidelities. Soon after, Letterman came clean.

For Letterman, taking responsibility, which sometimes can be the hardest part in a relationship facing turmoil, is not as hard as living with himself. "I have no one to blame but myself," he said. "I can’t forgive that behavior." Lasko however does forgive him and according to the late-night show host, their relationship is "never better." The two had been married for a mere six months before the scandal broke, and also have a 9-year-old son together.

Working "each and every day" to correct what he has done has made his marriage a better one.

"My life is fun and full of joy now — I only pretended it before," he said, but it's not perfect. "I’m still trying to fix it. It hasn’t gone away. It will never go away."
