The action star explains the couple's difficult grieving process.
Hugh Jackson recently opened up a discussion all too often plagued with negativity and shame.
The 44-year-old actor discussed his wife Deborra-Lee Furness' struggles with infertility over the 16 years they've been married, something people rarely talk about with their family, let alone the rest of the world.
"It is a difficult time. The miscarriage thing — apparently it happens to one in three pregnancies — but it’s very, very rarely talked about," he told Katie Couric in a recent appearance on her show. 'It’s almost secretive. But it’s a good thing to talk about. It’s more common and it’s tough, there’s a grieving process you have to go through."
While losing a baby isn't something any person should feel compelled to share, I think the importance of that support system remains, as does the reassurance that this isn't uncommon among women today.
The couple adopted their two children Oscar Maximillian and Ava Eliot after undergoing unsuccessful IVF treatments, but adoption was always in their family plan. "To be clear, Deb and I always wanted to adopt," the Les Miserables star added. "We didn’t know where in the process that would happen, but biologically, obviously, we tried and it was not happening for us."
It's brave of him to share their story with others. And the message is poignant — it's essential to offer open discussion on this topic.
"The moment Oscar was born all the heartache melted away," he said of his son's birth. "You can’t prepare for that moment, nothing can prepare you. You can’t even explain how incredible it is and that avalanche of emotion that comes. How it opens up your heart, how it frustrates you, how it angers you and... all of a sudden how alive you are."
