YT: Out of all the options out there, why cupcakes?
We learned to bake from our grandmother. Because our parents both worked, we spent a huge part of our childhood with her, and she was a tremendous influence on us growing up. We had all these wonderful cake recipes from her. When we decided to open our bakery, we wanted to do one thing, and do it exceptionally well, but still be able to provide our customers with variety. In this way, cupcakes were perfect. We could offer our customers all these wonderful flavors each day, but at the same time, we were focused on one product, and could make it amazing!
YT: You’re sisters, does that ever cause any drama?
Oh, yes! Working with your sister definitely has its advantages and disadvantages. Because we're sisters, we know how to push each other's buttons and we can get away with saying things to each other that we can't say to other employees. Needless to say, our conversations can get very heated at times, but at the same time, this level of openness and honesty really pushes us to make the best decisions for our business. On every episode of our show on TLC, DC Cupcakes, viewers see us arguing about anything and everything, but in the end, we're family, and we love each other. In the newest episode of DC Cupcakes on October 9th, we actually split apart for a week—the first time ever—and what starts off as a sisterly argument spirals into a competition to see who can sell more cupcakes. We really went at it in that episode!
YT: What do your husbands think about you being professional cupcake chefs? Do you bake for them all the time?
They love it! We love baking, and bake for them all the time. They have become our official "taste-testers." However, we're not sure they love it when they are stuck pulling all-nighters with us in the bakery, helping us finish big orders and cupcake sculptures. We tend to keep insane hours!
YT: Besides cupcakes, what’s your favorite food to eat on a date. We know it’s cupcakes for dessert!
Tapas! It's perfect for dates because you can share… and you can decide on what to order together. Our favorite is Mediterranean.
YT: Do you share dessert on a date, or order separate?
Because we have such big sweet tooths, we always like our own desserts! No sharing here! Wink, wink!
YT: What’s your favorite cupcake flavor?
Katherine: My favorite flavors are Salted Caramel and Peanut Butter Fudge. I love salty-sweet combinations!
Sophie: My favorite flavor is Chocolate Hazelnut. I love the balance between the smooth texture of the chocolate ganache and the crunch of the hazelnuts.
YT: What’s next for the Kallinis sisters?
We're excited for our opening in Los Angeles in November! We're opening Georgetown Cupcake on 143 S. Robertson Blvd and the shop is going to be amazing! It will have a viewing window into the kitchen so that you can see the cupcakes being baked and decorated. And, we're filming more fun episodes of DC Cupcakes for TLC this fall, and starting work on our third book, which will come out next year! We're definitely keeping busy!!
