For Breakfast, Love & Dinner, we got the chance to sit down with the sisters behind TLC's hit show.
Sisters Katherine Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne opened their first cupcake bakery, Georgetown Cupcakes, in Washington D.C. on Valentine's Day of 2008. Now, the sisters run their famous bakery in four locations and star in TLC's hit show DC Cupcakes. They are also guest judging YourTango's Next Engagement Chicken Recipe Contest (check out entries and learn more about how to enter here).
I recently got the chance to speak with them and got the details on how it all began, how the baking affects their marriages and what their favorite snacks are . . . next to cupcakes, of course.
YT: You both used to work in very different industries (finance and fashion) and decided to trade it in for a cupcake career! How did you go about making that drastic change?
We used to have completely different careers in finance and fashion, and were very happy with our careers, but we had this childhood dream of starting a bakery together that we never let go of. We talked about it all the time, and finally in the spring of 2007, we asked ourselves 'What are we waiting for?' We were afraid of what our family and friends would think of us, but finally we decided that we just had to go for it, and not worry about what others would think. We didn't want to spend the rest of our lives wondering 'what if?'
YT: You are already best-selling authors and now have a new book coming out this month. Tell us about that:
We are super excited about our new book Sweet Celebrations coming out October 9th! In this book, we share memories of our personal celebrations in our lives—including our engagements, bridal showers, weddings and anniversaries—and share more of our Georgetown Cupcake cupcake recipes for all kinds of life celebrations and parties as well as cupcake and cake decorating ideas and entertaining ideas and "how to's". This book is great for the novice and advanced baker alike.
YT: You have bakeries all over the country now. Where are you usually?
In the past five years, we've grown Georgetown Cupcake from our flagship in Georgetown, to locations in Bethesda, MD, SoHo in New York City, Boston, and we're extremely excited about opening our first west coast location in Los Angeles this November. We're opening in Atlanta next spring too! We also ship our cupcakes nationwide, so people can enjoy our cupcakes no matter what city they live in.
