Nina Dobrev Explains Why Actors Fall In Love At Work

'The Vampire Diaries' star opens up about how she tried to resist dating her costar Ian Somerhalder.

Nina Dobrev may be young, but she's smart. The 23-year-old intended to film CW's hit show The Vampire Diaries by staying strictly professional. When she first started filming, she was interviewed by Seventeen magazine, and the story ran with the cover line: "Nina: Why she wouldn't date any of her costars."

Two years later, Dobrev can't help but laugh at herself. She ended up doing exactly the opposite and is now happily dating her costar Ian Somerhalder, 33. "It's funny that I said that," the actress tells the new issue of Seventeen, according to People.

Although she finds it amusing now, Dobrev admits to wishing she could have kept her promise to herself. She says, "My goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can't help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long – which I did for a really, really long time." There is one goal that the young actress has down 100 percent though, and that's balancing her relationship with plenty of time for the girls. "Girls weekend with the Vampire Diaries girls has become a big deal," she tells Seventeen. "It's our quality time. It's so much fun to unload and not feel guilty complaining or talking about your insecurities or bonding over things that you thought you were on your own about."

It's nice to know someone as gorgeous as Dobrev would still be human enough to have insecurities. And we're sure her secret about growing up — "Even though you're growing up, you should never stop having fun" — keeps things with Somerhalder exciting!
