Marriages in Hollywood don't seem to last that long. Apparently, in New York City, they don't either. Last week, news broke of Katie Holmes filing for divorce from her husband of five years, Tom Cruise, and also filing for sole custody of their 6-year-old daughter Suri. Shocking Split! Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes Divorcing
As more details emerge, it seems 33-year-old Holmes seems to have been planning this split for awhile, as she already has a place of her own in Chelsea. Helping her with all the dirty details is her father, Martin, a lawyer based out of Toledo, Ohio.

Many have speculated it was Tom's intense belief in Scientology mixed with his controlling demeanor that pushed Katie away. As a Catholic, she didn't want her daughter constantly hassled by the beliefs she herself tried to work with but failed. If awarded sole custody, Katie will have decision-making power over Suri's education and religious upbringing.
When she filed for divorce last week, she was also moving into her new 3-bedroom NYC apartment with Suri. There have been many security-like men surrounding the premises since -- and while there have been rumors that those men were actually Scientology operatives following her, sources confirm it's actually security Katie has hired for her own safety. The Church of Scientology has also released a statement that they do not have anyone following the actress: "There is no truth whatsoever to the (report) that the Church of Scientology has sent anyone to follow or surveil Katie Holmes."
Tom is currently filming in Iceland and isn't too happy with his early birthday gift-- the star turns the big 5-0 tomorrow, and sources say he was completely blindsided by the divorce filing.
"He had no idea this was coming," a source tells People. "He's totally devastated and heartbroken."
