The struggle for the gay community to be allowed the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts has been an uphill battle for hundreds of years. Although once upon a time in some corners of the world, homosexuality was viewed as normal behavior, it eventually evolved into something that society decided was evil, and those who were gay were denied basic human rights.
There have been many historic movements and events that have contributed to making progress in the gay-rights movement, but we decided to narrow down the list to 13 items that happened over the last 50 years, starting with the 1969 Stonewall Inn riots in New York City. We may have come far, but we still have a lot more terrain to cover before we're all seen and treated as the equals we are.
