Sally Draper may adore her father Don in Mad Men, but in real life, Jon Hamm says he'd be no good at raising kids of his own.
The actor recently told Us Weekly: "I'd be a terrible father!"
Commenting on the lifestyles of some of his co-stars who've chosen to procreate, Hamm says: "I see my friends who have children and I'm like, 'Dude, how are you even upright, much less here at work at 6 a.m.?'"
Hamm recently played a role much like the friends he described in Friends with Kids, which was written by his long-time partner, Jennifer Westfeldt. The two have been together since 1997, but have repeatedly stated that they have no plans for marriage or children. Jennifer Westfeldt On Being Childless With "Dream" Beau, Jon Hamm
Westfeldt recently commented on her lack of children in the New York Times: "I've thought about this a lot lately. I never thought I'd be this age and not have kids. But my life has also gone in a million ways I never anticipated. I kept feeling like I'd wake up with absolute clarity, and I haven't. And we have a pretty great life together. The chance that we'll regret it doesn't seem like a compelling enough reason to do it. I may wake up tomorrow with that lightning bolt, and I'll have to scramble to make it happen."
On-screen, Don Draper is by no means a role model of a father, but he can be a strong force of support for his kids when his wife, Betty, makes them feel confused and alone. And even though Hamm may think he would be a terrible father, we think he'd be pretty good. He always presents himself with impeccable aplomb and he's never been the subject of controversy, unless it was making a very astute comment on our culture's obsession with reality television.
