Elizabeth Smart's Quicky Destination Wedding: Why The Rush?
By Faye Brennan. Posted on .
Elizabeth Smart's life is certainly bright and happy these days, especially now that she's a new bride!
The 24-year-old—who's known for being kidnapped from her own house when she was just 14 and held captive for nine months—married her boyfriend of one year, 22-year-old Matthew Gilmour, in a private ceremony in Hawaii on Saturday. 6 Never-Been-Done Destination Weddings
It was an unexpected turn of events, as the couple initially planned for a July 1 wedding when they became engaged last month. At the time, Smart's father, Ed, told People: "We're just thrilled. We're looking forward to (Elizabeth) moving on to this next stage and leading a very happy life... (she) wants to keep it very private and feels very strongly about that right now."
In the end, that drive to keep the wedding as secret as possible inspired Smart and her fiancé to change their plans and rush for a destination wedding this weekend... with only two weeks to plan it.
"It's everything you can imagine with planning a wedding. Only, it's compressed into a few days," Smart tells People.
Close family were the only witnesses to see Smart exchange vows with Gilmour, whom she met while doing Mormon mission work in Paris. But, Smart's rep told People on Saturday: "To be in one of her favorite places with her family has made for a dream wedding. It's been an absolutely beautiful day."
Her father added: "She is positively radiant. And Matthew couldn't be happier."
The new bride and groom will enjoy an equally private honeymoon before returning to newlywed life in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Congrats to the happy couple!
