After getting engaged over the holidays and pledging to say "I do" to fiancé William 'Willie' Wilkerson, it looks like Aretha Franklin is now singing a different tune.
According to People, the 69-year-old singer has called off her summer wedding, just a few short weeks after announcing the news.
"Regretfully, To Our Friends and Supporters: Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly," she said in a statement. "There will be no wedding at this time." Aretha Franklin: No, I'm Not Pregnant, But I Am Getting Married!
So what made the "Respect" singer change her mind and want to say "I don't"? Below are three reasons that might have caused her to cancel her engagement:
1. Health issues: Although Aretha announced last year that her health issues, supposedly stemming from pancreatic cancer, had been "resolved" and that she was "feeling fabulous" again after losing weight, it's no secret that the diva has had a long struggle with her health. Could a potential health set-back have caused her to cancel her wedding plans?
2. "The Friend Zone": Aretha and Willie's 25-year friendship may have blossomed into romance, but that doesn't mean they still can't be stuck in "The Friend Zone," which this website defines as a "situation in which one partner wants to become intimate romantically while the other prefers to be just friends." Perhaps, Aretha decided that she and Willie might just be better off as friends (or friends with benefits) rather than husband and wife. 10 Signs You're Just Friends
3. Financial concerns: Considering that the Queen of Soul's net worth is considered to be around $60 million, it seems like money could have played a role in Aretha's decision to end her engagement, especially given her statement that there were things that "had not been thought through" as well as the fact that, as a former firefighter, Willie's personal fortune is probably a lot less significant than her own. Could Aretha's four adult sons have cautioned her to not to go through with another wedding before considering a prenup as well as other financial issues that arise when two people get married?
