Wikipedia and several other websites are observing the "SOPA blackout" today in protest of two Internet piracy bills — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act. The tech industry argues that these laws would pretty much censor the Internet, since they would punish companies for displaying links to sites that host illegal downloading of music, movies and TV shows. The bills are backed by major media companies, but the tech industry and many of those working in the digital media space worry that they will give media companies too much power over the web.
