Charlene Wittstock: Runaway Princess Bride?

Prince Albert Charlene Wittstock
The Monaco palace denies the rumors that Prince Albert's fiancée wants to cancel their wedding.

Prince Albert of Monaco, the royal head of the tiny Riviera principality and the son of American actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly, is set to wed South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock this coming weekend in this summer's second, major royal wedding.

However, if you believe one French publication, the wedding was nearly called off!

According to L'Express via People Magazine, 33-year-old Charlene tried to return home to South Africa "after learning that Albert had not been leading the exemplary life she thought." (Does that mean that the 52-year-old bachelor, who fathered two out-of-wedlock children, had not exactly been faithful to her? Hmm...)

Although the Monaco palace vigorously denies these rumors, L'Express claims that Charlene even made it so far as the airport before she was stopped by officials, acting on behalf of the palace. However, palace spokesperson Christiane Stahl claims this story originated from people who are jealous of the pretty blonde's ascent into royalty.

"Please believe me, none of this is true, and we think it comes from utter jealousy...Charlene never left to go to the airport, nothing like that ever happened. She was never upset and never wanted to stop the wedding," said Stahl. Prince Albert Of Monaco Is Finally Engaged

Charlene has been dating Prince Albert since 2006, and according to the New York Times, has "endured a lot of nastiness" from locals who thought Prince Albert would never marry her. In an interview with Tatler Magazine last year, Charlene, who has struggled to learn French and who has no college degree or job other than being the prince's consort, admitted that she mostly keeps to herself in Monaco.

"The people I mixed with in Monaco didn't relate to my South African mentality or humor," she said. "Of course, I've been subject to jealousy, but that comes with the territory. Although I have met some wonderful people since I've been living in Monaco, I regard them all as acquaintances. I only have two people I consider friends here."

Doesn't that sound a bit lonely? We hope Charlene adjusts as to royal life quickly. Perhaps she could call Kate Middleton, aka the Duchess of Cambridge, and ask her for some pointers?
