In a new survey, singles say beach dates and karaoke are big summer dating don'ts.

Summer is in the air, and apparently so is romance—more than half of U.S. singles plan to go on more dates now that the solstice has passed.

In an effort to help all of these budding summer romances blossom, Zoosk polled more than 4,500 singles from 14 major cities to determine the best tips and tricks for this prime dating season. Here are the top findings from their survey:

Where to go. Sweet sunshine is enough for more than half of singles (58 percent) to say they prefer an outdoor date to a fancy dinner. But that doesn't mean you should plan a pool excursion or a day at the beach—unless you want an unhappy lady on your hands. While 76 percent of men would consider a date that required a bathing suit, 56 percent of women would say "not on your life" to such an aquatic adventure. 50 Best Summer Date Ideas

What to do. Now that you've got your location squared away, what will you do? If you think the answer is "sing!" then that may explain why you're single. Only four percent of those surveyed say the best summer date would include singing together at a karaoke bar.

How to pay. Splitting the check is still as controversial a topic as ever, mainly because men and women can't seem to agree on who is supposed to foot the bill after a date. When asked who should pay on a first date, 64 percent of women said the guy, and 81 percent of men agreed. Fellas, beware—only one percent of men and one percent of the women survey said the lady should cover the bill, though 35 percent of women said the check should be split on a first date. What to talk about. Bringing up a past relationship while on a date with a new flame is a big no-no, no matter what time of year. While both sexes agreed, more men (71 percent) than women (64 percent) were turned off by the topic. Coming in second in the race for most taboo date topic was your medical history (19 percent say leave the stories of phlegm and congestion at home), followed by politics (9 percent) and religion (6 percent).
