George Clooney Is Single Again, Breaks Up With Elisabetta Canalis

There are three things you can count on in life: taxes, death, and the fact that George Clooney will no doubt die a single man.

And, although it certainly seemed at times that the 50-year-old actor's longtime girlfriend (well, two years is a longtime in Clooney years, right?) 32-year-old Italian TV presenter, Elisabetta Canalis, had dug in her claws pretty tight, the bachelor recently confirmed what we all knew was inevitable — that the couple has broken up!

"We are not together anymore. It's very difficult and very personal, and we hope everyone can respect our privacy," George and Elisabetta said in a reportedly joint statement. George Clooney Doesn't Want Another Marriage…Ever

Elisabetta's rep also chimed in with a statement of her own, reports People Magazine:

"It is a very personal and sad matter, and Elisabetta wants it to remain that way. She will be taking some time...and then will face the press. She has not authorized me to say when the split happened."

Does "facing the press" mean that Elisabetta will air her grievances in a tell-all interview in the coming months? It's likely, although she might have a hard time winning sympathy, when she knew full-well going into the relationship that George had no interest in settling down.

Still, maybe Elisabetta, like many women in non-Hollywood relationships, seemed to think that she would be the one to change George and convince him to get married again. (George was previously married from 1989-1993 to actress Talia Shire.)

According to PopEater, Elisabetta was reportedly taken aback when George gave an interview to Piers Morgan earlier this year, claiming that he would never walk down the aisle again.

"Elisabetta had no idea he was going to say that," said a friend at the time. "She thought she was going to be the girl who would finally get George to settle down and put a ring on it. She was totally surprised."

Added another insider: "If he doesn't ask Elisabetta to marry him soon she will ask him...And if he says no, well there are plenty more fish in the ocean."

So, did Elisabetta finally get tired of waiting and give George an ultimatum? We wouldn't be surprised, especially since George has claimed in the past that the majority of the women he dates end up leaving him, and not the other way around.
