Scott Brown's Wife Didn't Know About His Past Sexual Abuse

Have you ever kept a big secret from your spouse?
Senator Scott Brown's wife, former reporter Gail Huff, revealed to The View on Monday that she didn't know about her husband's child sexual abuse until she read about it in his book, Against All Odds. He has never told her. She only had inklings of his painful past—an assault at summer camp when he was 10 years old—but never knew the whole picture.
"He would bring up little things," his wife of 23 years said. "I knew something terrible had happened because he always stopped at a certain point and never filled in the details."
That's a big revelation to stumble upon. Despite being in the dark for years, Gail told the hosts of The View that she accepted and respected the fact that Scott never brought it up. Ripple-Effected Souls: Spouses Of Sexual Abuse Victims
"I didn't feel angry that he hadn't told me because I think I understand from him," she said. "Because we've talked about it so much since, that the shame and embarrassment that comes along with it, made him feel so crippled."
Scott's wife wasn't the only one who was finding out about his abuse for the first time. His mother was also unaware.
WCVB TV reported: "My mom says now, 'Was that the time you were calling me to come home from camp?' And I said, 'Yeah, mom. That was it,'" Brown said on the talk show.
The senator insists he isn't bitter, though. He is just ready to move on, and only wants to help others who might be facing a similar situation. His one regret is not speaking up sooner.
"I'm not going to look back. I don't have any scores to settle," he said. "If I can help a couple of people come to grips… Number one, fight back. And the only mistake I made in retrospect is to not tell anybody."
Gail and their two children had a lot of emotions to sort through, just like her husband, but she said that the ordeal has been eye-opening and life-changing for them. Resolving Sexual Abuse: Solution-Focused Therapy and Ericksonian Hypnosis for Adult Survivors
"I know for a fact that he's closer to me than he is to anyone in the world, me and the girls, and I always felt that if he felt comfortable enough to share with me and the girls, then he would do that. But this has been a real growing and learning experience for the whole family."
Scott Brown's Against All Odds officially went on sale Tuesday. You can see a clip from the interview, courtesy of The Daily Beast, below:
