One app helps New Yorkers find free condoms, while the other keeps you safe on a first date.

All the hoopla about how the internet has changed dating is so 2001. These days, we're gushing over how smartphone apps are transforming the way we meet people, sext, break up and cheat. Thanks to mobile-based calendars, emails and location services, it's virtually impossible for smartphone owners to commit the usual first date hijinks, like getting lost or being unable to call for a rain check. Now, two practical new apps may make dating even easier by helping New Yorkers find free condoms in the city, and by ensuring that emergency contacts know that you made it through a first date without getting roofied or kidnapped. 5 Dating And Technology Rules You Need To Know

Date Tracker Alert LLC has relased myDateTrackerAlert, a dating safety app that lets up to four emergency contacts know your whereabouts if you don't check in with them after a predetermined time. Here's how it works: after inputting the location date and time of your date, you make an emergency contact page with that person's email and cell phone number. Set a check-in time, and remember to hit the "I'm OK" button on the app when that time arrives. If you don't hit the button, the app will send an email or text with the details of your date to your emergency contact. 4 iPhone Apps That Could Save Your Relationship

The idea behind myDateTracker is that, although blind dates or strangers can put up a good front online, there's no telling whether you'll end up in a bad place. Plus, people who travel alone often can use the app to quickly check in with their partners to let them know they arrived safely. iPhone 4 Great For Phone Sex, Long-Distance Love

Although the condom-locating app is available only in New York City, as it was released by the NYC Health Department, its success may prompt other agencies to follow suit. "We want New York City to be the safest city in the world to have sex," Dr. Monica Sweeney, NYC's assistant health commissioner, said. "A lot of people come here for that, so we want them to practice safer sex."

New York may be saddled with a reputation for rampant lewdness, but the city's actually given out 3 million free condoms a month for the past five years. The app will access New York's database of venues that offer free condoms and, using GPS, will give you the five closest locations where you can avail of them. Is The Problem With Condoms The Cost?
