YourTango Talks With Donald Faison

Donald Faison
YourTango's exclusive interview with the Skyline and Scrubs star, Donald Faison.

It's no surprise that Donald Faison (aka Dr. Chris Turk from Scrubs) is able to make a girl laugh... even over the phone. Nor is it surprising that, during my interview, the divorced father of four was enthusiastic when answering my questions about fighting aliens in the context of love and relationships. His response: "Wow, that's kind of abstract, but OK!" He is a good guy. A good guy with some wise words about how to keep your man, get that girl and save the world from alien invaders. You can see him in the new alien thriller Skyline, in theaters now.

YourTango: In the movie Skyline, a simple weekend away with your girlfriend turns into a terrifying encounter with extraterrestrials. This being YourTango, we were wondering what fighting aliens can teach us about being in a relationship?

Donald Faison: There are always, always surprises when fighting aliens because you don't know what you're dealing with. So it is in relationships: you're always surprised by your spouse's behavior, likes or dislikes. Just like when fighting aliens, when you're stepping into a relationship, you're stepping into the unknown.

How did fighting aliens affect your relationship with your girlfriend in the movie?

Let's just say this... When the aliens come, it doesn't do a good job to our relationship. In the movies, you can always tell by the relationship who is going to live and die.

OK, in that case, give me a relationship DO and a relationship DON'T. What are some romance rules?

DO. Be honest. Always, no matter what, as long as you're not hurting someone's feelings it's always good to be honest. Even if you want out, honesty is the best.

DON'T. Don't be too honest. Was Honest Abe really honest? We all saw what happened to him in that GEICO commercial.

And as a man, what relationship advice do you have specifically for us ladies?

It's always good to "big up" your man, if you want to make your man feel good when he walks out the door, tell him something great about himself. I guarantee he'll love that! 9 Compliments Men Crave

And for the gentlemen?

If you really like someone, you've got to be open to making an ass out of yourself for love. Speaking specifically for dudes, I think it's endearing when a guy is willing to do anything for his girl.

Which living, historical or fictional couple do you admire most?

Hans Solo and Princess Leia. They give each other so much crap, but you know she loves him and that he loves her. Even though they give each other so much crap, when it hits the fan, they have each other's back.
