Gavin Rossdale Confirms Gay Fling
By Becky Broderick. Posted on .
In his 1995 memoir, Boy George shocked female fans of Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale by revealing Gavin's five-year relationship with cross-dressing pop singer Peter Robinson, known as "Marilyn." (You may remember Marilyn as the very serious-looking blonde who popped up in the "Do They Know It's Christmas" video.) When the book hit shelves, Gavin denied any romance, stating, "I wasn't dating Marilyn. We were, and still are, good friends." Since Marilyn never came forward to confirm or deny the claims, it seemed like the truth was on Gavin's side. Blast From Gavin's Past
But last year, Marilyn finally came clean with In Touch Weekly, revealing that he had previously agreed to keep quiet about their '80s affair so as not to derail Gavin's burgeoning fame. Marilyn explained, "He was just becoming successful in America. I agreed to lie against every grain of my being."
After Marilyn's interview, Gavin still denied that he'd ever had a homosexual relationship. However, just as he's gearing up to reunite with Bush, Gavin is finally confirming that the rumors are true. He explains to DETAILS why he wasn't honest from the beginning:
I think at the outset there was a sort of fear—that was right at the beginning of Bush, and I didn't want it to be part of it. It felt like a cheap shot, so I was like, 'I'm not getting involved.' I've never wanted to appear closed about it. It's not something I've talked about really because it's always been in the glare of a tabloid world. It's just one of those things: Move on. When you're 17, Jesus Christ. I don't think there's anything strange about any form of—you're learning about life. It's a part of growing up. That's it. No more, no less.
In Gavin's admission, he says his relationship with Marilyn was limited to a "one-time experimentation," not a five-year romance...which doesn't really sit well with Marilyn, who claims that Gavin was the "love of his life." Marilyn tells In Touch, "I am pleased that Gavin is finally able to be honest about our relationship. I just wish he could have come to terms with this 15 years ago. I find it sad that when I spoke out about what we had, I was labeled a tattletale—and now Gavin is using it to promote himself."
Now that at least some version of the truth is out in the open, Marilyn hopes that Gavin's wife, Gwen Stefani, will finally allow Marilyn's "taboo" name to be uttered in their home. We hope Marilyn isn't holding his breath on that one.
