Portia de Rossi has filed to take the last name of her spouse Ellen DeGeneres.
Portia de Rossi is hoping to change her name for the second time in her life, although for much more celebratory reasons than the first. When looking back at the decision to go from Amanda Lee Rogers to her current monicker at the age of fifteen, de Rossi, 37, told the Advocate last year that
"It was largely due to my struggle about being gay. Everything just didn't fit, and I was trying to find things I could identify myself with, and it started with my name."
This time around the Australian actress proudly plans to take the last name of her spouse, the loved comedian and host Ellen DeGeneres, 53, and has filed at the L.A. Superior Court to become Portia Lee James DeGeneres. These Celebrity Couples Make Us Believe In Love.
The couple, married in an intimate ceremony at their L.A. home in August 2008 during the five month period in between California's Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage and the public referendum that overturned it, are obviously both strong supporters of gay marriage and have spoken publicly in favor of it and against Proposition 8. Fittingly, during the same week that de Rossi filed to take Degeneres's last name, a judge also ruled Prop 8, the ban on gay marriage in California, as unconstitutional.
