Mel Gibson's estranged wife is defending him against the allegations that he verbally abused and hit his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. "Mel never engaged in any physical abuse of any kind toward me before, during or after our marriage," Robyn told the California judge in charge of Mel and Oksana's custody battle over their nine-month-old daughter, Lucia. Mel and Robyn married in 1980 and had seven children, six sons and a daughter. In 2007 daughter Hannah made them grandparents. Robyn and Mel separated in 2006 and began divorce proceedings, which are still ongoing, in 2009. During his marriage to Robyn, Mel not only made a zillion dollars, he also struggled with his alcoholism and publicly said that Robyn will be going to hell, since she's not his kind of Catholic. "My wife is a saint. She's a much better person than I am. Honestly," he told The New Yorker in 2003. "She's, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it's just not fair if she doesn't make it [to heaven], she's better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it." Mel Gibson Makes Oksana Worship God His Way
