While looking absolutely beautiful at the Oscars earlier this month, Kate Winslet did look thinner than usual as she walked the red carpet alone. Now we learn that after seven years of marriage, she and American Beauty director Sam Mendes are divorcing. So sad!
The couple first met in 2001 to collaborate on a theater project, marrying in relative secrecy two years later in the West Indies with only three guests in attendance. Their last professional collaboration was 2008's Golden Globe-winning Revolutionary Road, where Mendes directed Winslet as an unhappy wife in a dysfunctional suburban family.
Perhaps the tea leaves had already divined the couple's fortune by then: During her 2009 Golden Globes acceptance speech for Best Actress she gushed over her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio while forgetting to mention her husband AND director of the film. Double whammy!
"Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year," their lawyers' statement reads. "The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children."
The Oscar-winning couple, who wed in 2003, have a six-year-old son, Joe Alfie Winslet Mendes. Winslet also has a nine-year-old daughter, Mia Honey, with director and ex-husband Jim Threapleton. Mendes directed Winslet's Golden Globe-winning performance in 2008's Revolutionary Road. [Source: EW]
With the pressure on for Bar Refaeli to dump DiCaprio for a nice Jewish boy, perhaps the time has arrived for a celebrity coupling of Titanic proportions.
