Why Men Hate Valentine's Day

Of all the over-commercialized holidays, none is more egregious than Saint Valentine's Day.  Men have the reputation for not being a huge fan of the Day Of Love, but I'm guessing more than a few of them hate it for reasons the girls will appreciate.


I once called a girlfriend while she was at work, asked her what she was wearing, and sent her a floral arrangement that matched.  I did that because I was thinking of her.  When a guy sends his woman flowers on Valentine's, it has nothing to do with romance or his thoughts of her; it's forced.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't women prefer non-extorted gifts?  A small box of chocolates just because he thought of her when he saw them... a soft li'l teddy bear because he wanted her to have something at work that reminds her of him... a "thinkin' bout ya" greeting card left for her to find... wouldn't these mean infinitely more if done out of the blue and for no good reason?

You know how guys are: Tell us we can't do something, we have to try it.  Tell us we have to do something, and we will avoid it at all costs or follow through begrudgingly.

We want to tell you we love you because it was our idea.

Before the Female Party offers up their response to my State of Our Union, I will concede that, yes, we men fall regretfully short in following through on these thoughtful gestures.  I will also acknowledge that we must - like it or not - send our girl flowers on February 14th because we cannot have her be the only woman in her office not being called to reception to pick up her loot.

I guess what I'd like to see is a coming together of the Two Parties.  We'll acknowledge Valentine's Day enough that you're not embarrassed at work, you let us off the hook with your expectations the rest of that particular day, and we'll take more opportunities throughout the year to show you that we love and appreciate you... completely unprompted.
