Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock Smooch
Are same-sex, onstage kisses still so shocking?

The Golden Globes aired last night, but everyone's still talking about the same-sex kiss shared by Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards on Friday, January 15. Here's the lowdown:

Bullock and Streep tied for the Best Actress award, Bullock with Blind Side and Streep with Julie and Julia. "This is bullshit," joked Bullock (echoing our own thoughts). She then surprised us all by going in for an open-mouthed kiss—much to award presenter Bradley Cooper's obvious delight (have you seen those pictures with him grinning in the background?)—eventually admitting, with all sincerity, that sharing this award with Streep was an honor. "No one expects this," she said.

She later confirmed that "Meryl is a good kisser."

We love Streep (Mamma Mia! rocks our socks off) and, um, Bullock's cool, too. But are we really considerning another same-sex, onscreen kiss newsworthy?

Britney Spears and Madonna famously locked lips at MTV's 2003 Video Music Awards. And then, last year, the world was up in arms over Adam Lambert's gay kiss at the American Music Awards (because, somehow, sapphic smooching is more acceptable than the smooching that occurs between two dudes). And, in fictional land, producers of Heroes tried to boost ratings by promoting Hayden Panettiere's forthcoming lesbian kiss. Are we really so easy?

Please tell me we're not that easy. Promise me, you guys. Can we all please let a kiss be just a kiss? (Because you're only egging awards show producers on.)
