How long should you wait?

I was with my boyfriend for about 4-6 months and i wanted to get married i think he did too. The only thing we were in highschool and it was probably too soon for us but we were in love. Sometimes I don't think he was really in love until we start knowing more about each other or at least until he knew more about me. I haven't really discussed wedding plans to my parents or his parents. Then when I found out he had to go somewhere before college started it shocked me. The following summer we broke up...My question is how long should I wait to get married and when is the right time to be official?
