Why are some guys materialistic?

One day I met a guy who just liked video games and tv. Mostly we were oung but I liked him alot. Now that we grew up, I want to know if he's that same guy that's just into material things. I've heard that if the person hardly changes but if their motivated enough they will change. I had a wonderful relationship with him and he wants to move on but i can't help feeling attached. What should I do, just keep on going or take into perspective that i could go back with him and see if he has changed?
