1. Never go shopping when you're hungry. You'll bring home things you don't really want and wonder what you were thinking.*
2. Feel the tomatoes before you take them home.
3. Sometimes it works to give out free samples, sometimes it doesn't. So don't give out more than you want to/can afford.
4. Labels can be deceptive, so read between the lines - 0 g trans fats in the ingredients is not the same as no trans fats at all. You have to check for hydrogenated oils. Learn to translate the dating profiles.
5. Sell your good points - water has no calories (yes, I've seen that on a label), potato chips are sugar free, sugar-water popsicles are low in fat. Okay, maybe joining the deceptive camp isn't so good.
6. Be safe - don't buy it if the manufacturer's seal is broken and don't have sex without protection. (Not really parallel, but I have to mention it.)
* Never go shopping while drunk would probably be a good rule too, although I've never seen anyone try.
