David Letterman said during his show last night that someone had tried to blackmail him for $2 million, over allegations that Letterman had sexual relationships with some of the women who worked for him.
The late-night funnyman admitted that yes, he had had inappropriate relations with some lady-folk working, ahem, under him.
"My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would. I feel like I need to protect these people. I need to certainly protect my family."
An honorable instinct, but we're not sure if they're really protected, as their names are already circulating on the internet.
Stephanie Birkitt is one of the women involved in the scheme. She is Letterman's former assistant, and was reportedly living with Robert Halderman, the man who threatened the comic.
Birkitt has appeared on the Late Show several times. In 2002 she called Letterman, "the best boss I've ever had." In 2003 she said, " Aside from being incredibly funny and personable he is generous, kind, and is great fun to play catch with. I really couldn't ask for a more fun work environment."
Halderman, also known as Joe, is a CBS News employee known for producing episodes of 48 Hours. Police arrested him on Thursday, on charges of attempted grand larceny.
Birkitt and Halderman met 15 years ago before she started working on the Late Show. According to RadarOnline, Birkitt did not know Halderman was using her in an extortion scheme, and is "is mortified Halderman is using her fling with Letterman to blackmail her boss."
David Letterman is married to Regina Lasko. The couple has been together since 1986. They married this past March, and have a 6-year-old son, Harry.
