Jim and Jenny make commitment, but it's not quite legal.
Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy, a (surprisingly low-key) couple since 2005, may have quietly tied the knot in Malibu, the National Enquirer is reporting. The comic couple "said that they would 'be forever in love' with one another and that they would always be together. For the two of them, it was as good as a marriage ceremony," a source told the rumor-mongering rag. Jim's rep is denying the report, although the actor said last year at the premiere of his film Yes Man that he and Jenny were married in their hearts.
We find it a little bizarre that two people as outgoing and publicly, well, wacky as Jim and Jenny have had such a quiet relationship for so many years. Jim has been married twice, once to the mother of his 22-year-old daughter, Jane, who is expecting Jim's first grandchild, and in the '90s to actress Lauren Holly. Jenny was married to director John Asher for six years, and has a seven-year-old son, Evan, from that marriage. But the two kept their relationship under wraps for a year before disclosing it in 2006, and despite a photo op involving Borat's swimsuit last year, they've mostly flown under the radar. Will These Couples Beat the Odds?
"We love each other and we are married whether somebody said it or not," Jim said last year. "Whether we had some kind of ceremony or not, we believe that nothing outside of yourself can make your union sacred except you." Which is kind of a cool philosophy to have. We are all for weddings and marriage and what have you, and indeed think the U.S. economy would benefit greatly from loads more weddings, but if Jim and Jenny want to keep their commitment paperless, that's just lovely. Chris Noth and Tara Lynn Wilson salute you both.
