Jon Gosselin says he clung on to his marriage, and now his kids are struggling with the split.
InTouch Weekly Magazine has published an astonishing interview with the reality TV dad everyone loves to hate, Jon Gosselin. Since last May when he and wife Kate announced their split on TLC's Jon & Kate Plus 8, the public has sided largely with Kate, who's usually the one seen parenting their eight kids.
Jon's very public romances with multiple younger women are what have turned the public off, but in this new InTouch interview, Jon's revealing a side of the story that most followers will be shocked to hear: he went to great lengths to save his marriage, but Kate wanted him gone. Their divorce will be final on September 30.
Jon says with all the TV projects and fame, last October Kate realized that she wanted to put her career first. InTouch reports Jon as saying, "Kate basically came to me out of the blue and said, 'I am done. You are going to live your life, and I am going to live my life.'" Jon says his response was, "'What?' I didn't really know what was going on...I was really upset and nervous."
He went on to seek help, reading self-help books and trying to recover the parts of his personality that he says "had changed a lot" throughout the marriage. "In December," he says, "I went to therapy. I asked Kate to come, but she didn't want to. She said, 'If you have a problem, go fix it.'"
At that point, it was over. Jon reveals that in January he and his wife began living separate lives. He hung with guy friends, which he said he hadn't done for years, and in May he began his controversial affair with 23-year-old Hailey Glassman, the daughter of Kate's plastic surgeon. Jon opens up about what attracted him to Hailey: "She is the polar opposite of Kate. It's really different. I feel good about myself and people see my good qualities. I'm not being put down."5 Nastiest Celeb Divorces
So why was he caught out with Star reporter Kate Major in New York in July? He says he was just happy to have a buddy in New York to have dinner with, but Kate Major had to quit her job after they were spotted out together because it was a conflict of interest for her work. Meanwhile, he's still with Hailey but has to tread lightly in how he introduces her to the kids: "I can't just show up with Hailey." He says the kids are still trying to understand what's happening between their mom and dad. "They're like, 'Why aren't [Mom and Dad] together? Why can't you hug her?' The other day, Alexis said, 'I want you and Mommy to be home together.'"
It's clear the kids are taking the split hard. "We are dealing with eight different personalities, and they will each handle it in different ways...I feel like I failed them."
