Dating A Black Guy? 10 Things NOT To Say

Ten things not to say to that cute black man you're dating.

Even though we live in a "post-racial society" (thanks, Oprah!), we're all still pretty much ignorant when it comes to stereotypes.

Before reaching across the color line to make nice, make sure to avoid uttering any of these awkward phrases that'll have the "cool" black guy seeing red.

10. "So what sports do you play?"
We love playing tag. As a matter of fact, you're "it." Go hide while we count to a hundred million. 1... 2 ... 3...

9. "Do you work here?"
No, but the guy over there does. You'll notice he has a name tag and a spiffy uniform that matches the colors in the store's logo.

8. "How many kids do you have?"
None ... of your business.

7. "Hey, you look like, [insert famous black guy's name here]."
No, we don't. End of story. But you look like an ass, though.

6. "I love your name, it's so ethnic."
We did too, until you made it sound like some sort of "ethnic" dinner special. Mom and Dad will be so pleased that some strange woman approves of their choice.

5. "Do you know where I can score some weed?"
Probably the same place you get your coke—and we're not talking about soda. Zing!

4. "I've never dated a black guy before."
Hmm, we wonder why? Good luck with that (not really).

3. "I voted for Obama."
Oh, so that explains the landslide victory. I'll definitely let him know when I see him at the next family reunion.

2. "Oh, I thought it would be bigger than that."
Talk about a buzz kill. Saying something like that is actually going to make it get smaller and us disappear right after that. By the way, you do realize that if we were all large and in charge that would actually make big the average, right?

1. "So is it really that big?"
Yes. We know that totally goes against what we just said in number two, but we happen to like this fact-based stereotype.

What a DUMB article! no difference how black or white men would feel about stupid or insulting questions. Level of education, income, life experiences, job opportunities, where you grow up, etc. are the things that shape someone's personality, sense of humor and outlook; not the color of their skin. many of different races have more in common with people of other races based on these factors, not skin color.

The person who wrote this ridiculous article is the person with issues and hangups and should be the last one giving out "advice." I might be better to speak about this since my first husband of 11 years was black (he passed away) and my 2nd husband is white.

I'd say those questions are pretty dumb to ask any man, black, white or other ethnicity.

How come I am just receiving this article now (in my inbox) when there are comments here since August?

Funny article with the usual truths about ignorance and sterotyping that affect all races. This article captured it somewhat (some points were just silly though) for dating black men.

Stefanie, if you have questions about your account email me lyz@yourtango.com, I'd love to help.

I agree with you assessment. I think sometimes people don't realize how what they are saying affects other people.

I think this article is ridiculous!!! Really do you go up to white pple and say Katie Couric is my favorite news anchor? I have dated black guys and i am in a relationship with a black guy now and I frankly dont see the difference in our color i just see him as a human male.. If you see it differently then you shouldnt even try to strike a conversation with a black male.. Just my opinion.

There are different cultural touchpoints that I don't think we are aware of and often we say things that are derived from our culture without thinking about how they sound to the person we are talking to.

Because he is BLACK and has a different cultural frame of reference. The same can be said of dating Asians, or middle easterners etc. If one approaches everyone as if they were the same it can only led to tension. We are all human but we have to be sensitive to individual experiences and culture. So always good to get comfortable with someone then you can find out all you need to know. PS Dated tonnes of white girls :-)

Unfortunately, when some people are put in a situation that they haven't been in before, they may react awkwardly, and say some weird things (" I have some black friends," "I love Oprah!", "____________ (insert black artist here) is one of my favorite artists!").

You would be surprised some of the things that people say to African Americans.

Ummm......there are quite a few things that bother me about this article (but making a comment would be too obvious) However in regards to dating a Black guy...How about an article on how to snag one? Thanks!
