Love And Death And The Solar Eclipse

Does a solar eclipse bode well for your love life? Or predict the end of the world?

Today, Asia was treated to the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century. And in most cases, people were excited about it. In India, scientists observed the eclipse from fighter jets. In Japan, spectators flocked to the southwest islands, where the moon blocked the earth's view of the sun for more than six and a half minutes. And in China, the government took the eclipse as an opportunity to educate the masses about science and dispel superstitions.

We know what you're thinking: "Superstitions? What superstitions? The kind that predict that that foxy guy in strategic planning who doesn't even know I exist will finally notice me, fall madly in love with me and beg me to be the mother of his children before the end of the year?"

Well, depending on who you ask, sort of.

Siva Prasad Tata, who runs the Astro Jyoti website, says that: "During the period of the eclipse, the opposite attracting forces are very, very powerful."

Lynn Hayes, of Beliefnet, suggests that a solar eclipse has "the potential to help us to release blocks and uncover the mysteries of who we are at the deepest core of our soul." Read: Soul Mate Myths

And the Zodiac Arts website claims that with this particular solar eclipse, we will find ourselves "called to use previously learned skills and talents in new ways and that the opportunities to do so will come through our relationships."

But not everyone sees an eclipse as an occasion for improving our personal and romantic lives.

In some parts of India, the belief is that solar eclipses cause birth defects. Thus, many pregnant women choose not to go outside during an eclipse and some couples try to schedule the births of their babies around the celestial occurrence. Pregnant On The Pill

And in China, the old-school superstition is that solar eclipses are closely linked to natural disasters and war. Not very romantic.

Whether you choose to believe the interweb astrologers or ancient susperstitions is, of course, up to you.

As for us, we'll just be sitting here looking at the latest pictures on the NASA website, appreciating the fact that the sun and moon are doing what they need to do, and hoping that—with or without divine intervention—we get asked out before the next big earthquake hits.

Can you relate?
