Steven Spielberg, Michael Jordan, Neil Diamond – these are names of some of the greatest celebrities of all time. They’re also the names of the celebrities who have paid out some of the largest celebrity divorce settlements of all time. Well, if everything goes according to California State law, another name is about to top the list: Mel Gibson.
Gibson’s soon-to-be-ex-wife, Robyn Gibson, just filed for divorce, ending their 28-year marriage after three years of separation. With no indication that the couple has a prenuptial agreement in place, she is entitled to half of everything that the actor-producer-director earned over the course of their marriage from 1980 to the date of their legal separation. Hold onto your wallets folks because Gibson is estimated to be worth close to $1 billion, which could make for the largest divorce settlement in Hollywood history: a whopping $500 million.
Hollwood attorneys are salivating at the prospect of Gibson having to split not only his past fortune with Robyn but any residuals that come in from work performed during that time. For example, if he gets a residual check from Braveheart or The Passion of the Christ, she would get half.
We don’t know if there will really be a long, drawn-out battle in the courts over this divorce but we can tell you one thing: if she does decide to take him for half, the pen used to sign that paperwork might be the most lethal weapon ever used in a Hollywood divorce court.
