Over the past couple of years, Leonardo DiCaprio has been seeing Bar Refaeli here and there. It's fair to say that he's been on her and off her regularly (wait for it). There was even a rumor that they were to be wed in Israel (clearly in a civil ceremony). But now that she's the Sports Illustrated cover girl, is it time for him to ship or get off the pot (better options than choosing whether to ship or go blind)?
As you likely know, the SI swimsuit issue cover is more or less the most coveted gig in the modeling racket. While it doesn't have the prestige of something a little more on the haute couture side, it certainly reaches a wider audience and cranks careers up to eleven. Rebecca Romijn, Gisele Bundchen, Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Oprah, Marissa Miller (no relation) and even Beyoncé have gotten huge career boosts from gracing the mag's cover.*
But there is an interesting (and totally unsubstantiated rumor) coming out of the hate-work that Leo actually had something to do with her placement on the cover. According to Radar (now in muck-raking tabloid format), it's being whispered that Leo helped Bar Refaeli get the spot as a way to bug old girlf Gisele Bundchen. That is positively Clooney-an in its splendor and deviousness (irrespective if it's true).
Let's not discuss where Leo D would get the kind of clout that he could order a cover; let's talk about what his motivations would be. Maybe the 23-year old model was pressuring the actor to wed and he said that he'd, "do the next best thing," and boom goes the dynamite she's on the SI cover. He's going to have to come up with some pretty interesting tricks to keep this up. Per GossipGirls.com, he just won the International Green Film Award, he could just give it to her. Eventually, he'll probably be better off marrying her; it'll be a trick that would put Frank Abagnale (Catch Me If You Can) to shame if he could scam her into a Pulitzer or a Nobel Prize.
